Download and Install GanttPV

(Note: The most recent scripts are included in release v0.8.)

Instructions are available for the three major GanttPV platforms.

If you are using GanttPV with another platform, please share your experiences in the GanttPV Forum.

To download GanttPV for the Mac:

  1. Locate the download links in the right hand column of this page.
  2. Click on the "MacOS 10.4 or later" link in the right column.
  3. Look through the locations and find one that is relatively close.
  4. Click in the "Download" column on the link.
  5. "GanttPV_Mac_10.4_v0.8b.dmg" will be downloaded to the folder specified in your web browser.

To install GanttPV for the Mac:

  1. Double click the "GanttPV_Mac_10.4_v0.8b.dmg" file. This will create a folder named: "GanttPV v0.8 Folder"
  2. If you prefer, you can move the "GanttPV v0.8 Folder" into the "Applications" folder in your Home directory.
  3. Double click on the "GanttPV v0.8 Folder" to open the folder.
  4. Double click on the "GanttPV" file icon to start GanttPV.
  5. Read the file named "Read Me.txt" or the "Release Notes"
  6. Follow the Guided Tour at http://www.pureviolet.net/ganttpv/help/tour.html

Possible problems:

  • Sometimes a download location doesn't work. If so, try another.
  • Files that end with ".sitx" are StuffIt files. But the Mac, as of MacOS 10.4, no longer includes the StuffIt programs. For this reason, we recently switched our Mac version from StuffIt files to zip files. If you downloaded a StuffIt file and it is not working, download GanttPV again from right-hand column. You should receive a zip file this time. (Alternatively, you can download StuffIt Expander from the StuffIt website.)
  • One user reported that GanttPV would not start on his machine. Based on evidence provided there appeared to be a conflicting software installation. If GanttPV will not start for you, please contact me at Brian@PureViolet.net so that we can run a diagnostic program on your machine to discover the conflict.
  • If GanttPV will not run after installation with StuffIt, try installing using a different program. One of our users (thanks!) determined that an error in some versions of StuffIt can corrupt GanttPV.

To download GanttPV for Windows:

  1. Locate the download links in the right hand column of this page.
  2. Click on the "Windows" link in the right column.
  3. Look through the locations and find one that is relatively close.
  4. Click in the "Download" column on the link.
  5. "GanttPV_Win_v0.8b.exe" will be downloaded to the folder specified in your web browser.

To install GanttPV for Windows:

  1. Double click the "GanttPV_Win_v0.8b.exe" file. This will run an installation script that will install GanttPV into your Programs directory and add GanttPV to the "Start" menu.
  2. Select "GanttPV" from the "Start" menu start GanttPV.
  3. Read the file named read me text or the "Release Notes"
  4. Follow the Guided Tour at http://www.pureviolet.net/ganttpv/help/tour.html

Possible problems:

  • Sometimes a download location doesn't work. If so, try another.
  • If you are using Windows 95, 98, or ME, you may get an error message saying that a "unicows.dll" file is missing. GanttPV for Windows includes Unicode support for world wide characters. Older versions of Windows may not have support for this installed. Instructions on how to resolve this are available in the PM Forum in the Using GanttPV Forum.
  • Another error message: "GANTTPV has caused an error in msvcrt.dll" really means that the "unicows.dll" file is missing. Follow the directions given above. Thanks to Stefano for explaining this in his forum post.

To download GanttPV for Linux:

  1. Locate the download links in the right hand column of this page.
  2. Click on the "Source" link in the right column.
  3. Look through the locations and find one that is relatively close.
  4. Click in the "Download" column on the document icon.
  5. "GanttPV_Source_v0.8b.tgz" will be downloaded to the folder specified in your web browser.

To install GanttPV for Linux:

  1. Unpack the file.
  2. Move the icon and script directories into the ganttpv directory.
  3. Run GanttPV with the following command: python ganttpv/GanttPV.py

Unfortunately, the developers do not have access to a Linux machine to create a distribution for Linux. The following entries in the forum may be useful as you install GanttPV. Please share your experiences to help other users.


After installing Linux:
  1. Read the file named read me text or the "Release Notes"
  2. Follow the Guided Tour at http://www.pureviolet.net/ganttpv/help/tour.html

Possible problems:

  • Sometimes a download location doesn't work. If so, try another.
  • Make sure you are using a compatible version of Python and wxPython. (The developers use: Python version 2.3.3 and wxPython version 2.6.0.0.)
